Common Pet Parasites

Dogs and cats have parasites that cause a variety of health concerns. Common parasites apply to both cats and dogs; however, some parasites impact pets in different ways. Common parasites in pets include:

  • Hookworm
  • Roundworm
  • Heartworm
  • Ticks
  • Fleas
  • Tapeworms

Intestinal worms cause a variety of symptoms and health concerns. In many cases, the symptoms help our veterinarian identify the type of parasite and provide a treatment strategy. It also helps us prevent your pet from facing a disease due to the parasite.

Diseases from Parasites

Diseases associated with a parasite range from mild to severe health concerns. Depending on the specific parasite, the risks to your pet's health may vary. Common diseases associated with parasites in your pets include:

  • Lyme's disease, which stems from ticks
  • Infections from parasitic worms, like hookworm infection or roundworm infection
  • Giardiasis, which causes health concerns in pets and is spread through contaminated water
  • Toxoplasmosis, which is usually spread by animal feces

Parasites in your pets can cause harm to your body. It even spreads diseases and parasites to humans. By taking measures to prevent parasites from causing harm to your pet, you also protect your family and loved ones.

Treating Pets for Parasites

In our clinic, we offer treatments for parasites. Our treatments focus on the needs of your pet and their specific situation. Generally, we use medications to treat your pets for parasitic worms. The medications kill the worms and their eggs before they spread further. It is particularly important if you suspect heartworm or other parasites, since the worms may cause severe harm to your pet's health and well-being.

In the case of fleas and ticks, we suggest a variety of treatments. We may suggest medicated baths or a medication your pet eats to help eliminate fleas on a pet's coat. We also suggest flea collars or other treatments to prevent future infestations. For ticks, we remove the tick before taking further steps. We may also test your pet for Lyme's Disease if you find a tick and we remove it. Deer ticks may spread the disease to pets and humans.
